no big hot spots now. we checked in with chp. everything looks good so far. as you can see, yeah, not a car in sight so far across the golden gate bridge. we'll talk about traffic on the bridge approaches coming up on "timesaver traffic." picket lines are up at the port of oakland. port workers started their one- day walkout last night at the oakland airport. they did not try to stop airport operations but they hope to stop work at the port today. >> we're going to show the port authority that we're serious, that we want a contract. we want to protect our worker benefits. it's a matter of worker solidarity. we're here to stand up for our -- i'm from san francisco. we are going to stand up for other brothers in oakland. >> maintenance staff and janitors went on strike because they have been without a contract for 16 months. and they have rejected management's latest offer. nurses plan to go on strike at 10 bay area hospitals at 7:00 this morning. the walkout is planned for two days at eight sutter hospitals

and for today only at two san jose hospitals run by hospital corporation of america. replacement nurses have been hired for five days. it will be the second nurses strike in the bay area this month. key issues include staffing levels and sick leave. 4:31 now. a priest at a san jose catholic school has resigned after defending a registered sex offender's presence on their campus. mark gurries was volunteering last month when someone recognized him. but gurries produced a letter from the san jose diocese saying he could be there. and that claim was defended by the parish priest. but it turns out the letter wasn't written or signed by the proper church officials and gurries was escorted off campus. now, the bishop in charge of the diocese has apologized and tells parishioners it will not happen again. a search continues in san jose for a suspect police say was involved in a crime spree that included a fatal shooting. it began on friday night with

four armed robberies. one of the suspects appears in that surveillance video you were watching. the crimes also included a carjacking that left a young man dead and a shootout that injured an officer. >> these were heinous crimes perpetrated by two individuals with no regard for human life. >> the murder victim, rory parkpettiford had just bought a used bmw that morning, 22-year- old old. his father is urging the suspect on the run to turn himself in. u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton is heading to the middle east to seek a solution to the conflict between israel and the palestinians. it's been a week since israel began air strikes on the gaza strip. it's retaliation for rocket attacks on israel by hamas. at least 113 palestinians have been record killed in gaza nearly half of them civilians. the death toll in israel remains just at 3. susan mcginnis has more on the

efforts to end the violence. reporter: hamas in gaza issued the call for morning prayers today even as bombs and missiles rained down around them. the israeli military says it hit about 100 terror sites overnight including the islamic national bank in gaza city that israel says is used to fund terror operations. hamas militants have launched more than 1,000 rockets into israel during the week-long battle. palestinian officials say 38 more people were killed monday including women and children. israel says it's time to minimize civilian casualties. >> the problem is the terrorists are hiding these rocket launchers deep inside civilian areas and mosques and schools and people's homes, firing them at our civilians. it's very hard to get to the equipment but it's necessary. >> reporter: president obama is

sending secretary of state hillary clinton to israel to help with cease-fire negotiations. she will arrive today and meet with israeli prime minister netanyahu tomorrow. >> our bottom line is peaceful outcome has to include an end to rocket fire that threatens israel. >> reporter: hamas told reporters in cairo hamas will not stop launching rockets until israel stops its bombing campaign and ends the blockade of gaza. he also said israel is bluffing and won't send troops into gaza. israeli officials say that's no bluff. susan mcginnis, cbs news, washington. in israel, a security guard at the u.s. embassy in tel aviv was slightly injured today when he was attacked by a man wielding a knife and axe. the suspect an israeli man has been detained. the motive is unknown but there is no indication it has anything to do with the conflict in gaza. four men are under arrest in southern california in an alleged terror plot. the fbi says they conspired to

kill americans overseas and in the u.s. and planned to join al qaeda and the taliban. one suspect is a 34-year-old man who served in the us air force in 2000 and 2001. authorities say he tried to arrange for two california men to meet his contacts with terror organizations. a man whose watch set off a bomb scare at the oakland airport won't face charges. this is the watch of the man. he tried to take this past security checkpoints last thursday. the toggle switch, fuses and wires apparently raised some alarms there. obviously. deputies arrested 49-year-old jeffrey mcgann and evacuated the terminal. >> i'm an artist. it's an art project. i travel with numbers of them to give to friends and family and people that give me corporate work, et cetera. >> well, the alameda county district attorney's office did not comment on why they dropped the charges. mcgann tells us this is the first time he has ever run into any trouble for wearing art in an airport.

that might set off a few whistles and bells. >> you would think about going to the airport wearing something like that. >> or disclose it. >> weather-wise, yeah. we have a little mist. i think rain is on the way. >> i know it was windy this morning. >> could you feel it in the air today. we have changes coming. we have a cold front heading in our direction. the wind has picked up. we have clouds and showers overnight in the north bay. check out your high-def doppler radar. light showers continuing there, drizzle at the coastline. see the showers continuing on and off throughout the night now into the santa rosa area. that's what we're seeing, not a whole lot of moisture with this system yet but the main cold front hasn't returned so we'll see more of this throughout the day today. it will be wet at times around the bay area but the cold front still lingering to the north. it will take its time getting here. not until late in the day and then overnight tonight before it stretches into the bay area bringing rain across our skies and overnight tonight. outside right now mostly cloudy looking beautiful and then the temperatures not too bad mainly

in the 50s in most spots. 57 and mild in santa rosa. 57 san jose. cool 48 in livermore and 59 in san francisco. temperatures going to be in the 60s today but will this be it for the rain as we head toward the holiday? we'll talk more about that. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> reporter: possibly a dry turkey day. thanks, lawrence. outside now things looking good towards the bay bridge toll plaza. we have a couple of lanes blocked. caltrans crews are working this morning on the upper deck so a couple of lanes blocked, traffic still light so it's not much of a delay heading into san francisco right now. elsewhere to the san mateo bridge, and as you can see, both directions still moving at the limit about 14 minutes between hayward and foster city. so we are seeing one accident eastbound 580 through the altamont pass approaching grant line road both directions. it is going against the commute with just a heads up. if you are traveling westbound 580 out of tracy and all the way towards livermore that's the drive time between the altamont pass and 680, 14

minutes. so not too bad to start off this morning. golden gate bridge a quick look, you will find various lanes blocked in the northbound direction this morning. and they have not done any lane changes yet so we'll let you know as soon as they do plus check mass transit coming up. back to you guys. >> thank you. 4:39. today city supervisors in san francisco will decide whether to ban nudity in most public places. it would apply to anyone over the age of 5. but there would be exemptions for participants in street fairs and parades that do have permits for such. supervisor scott weiner authored the ordinance being voted on today. he says that despite the city's liberal traditions, nudity has gone too far. >> the public nudity is not always appropriate. and particularly in our neighborhoods and commercial districts where we all have to live, work and live our lives together, public nudity is at times going too far. >> the proposal also has the support of the mayor ed lee.

he says it strikes just the right balance since nudity is still allowed in some controlled settings here in the city. so we want to know what do you think about a ban on public nudity in san francisco? comment on facebook or twitter, or email us at mornings@cbs5.com. voters in berkeley have rejected a so-called sit-lie ban. measure s would have banned sitting and lying on commercial sidewalks between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. but it lost by a margin of 4%. very close. the vote counting was finally finished last friday. opponents said the campaign behind the measure had sought to criminalize innocuous behavior. the debate over free muni rides for young people goes before san francisco supervisors today. the board is expected to come out in favor of a pilot program that would last 22 months. yesterday, a board committee voted against the free rides. supervisor scott weiner says the money would be better spent improving the transit system.

weather is pelting the pacic hwest, causing pow it is even too much for an area i don't know for its rain. wet windy weather pelting the pacific northwest causing a number of power outages and road closures in oregon and washington. the weather is linked to at least one death a hunter killed when a tree fell on his tent. strong winds most of the week and up to 2.5 feet of snow in the olympics and cascades. i was on the phone with my aunt dorothy up in portland. she says it's a mess up there. a lot of people worried about thanksgiving because a lot of travel going on.

>> is she doing okay? >> oh, yeah, she's fine. she lives on the willamette and it's coming up. >> it's early for that to be happening to see that much rain. right now we're not seeing la nina or el nina. it's a la nada. so we're kind of bouncing between fluctuation patterns so we are not sure what we are going to expect as we head into the winter. things locked up. we have a trough along the west coast, we get a lot of rain. right now we have showers. you can see some of the scattered light showers continuing mainly in the north bay right now although we have seen some drizzle out along the immediate coastline but the showers have been sporadic and on and off throughout the night in much of the north bay so expect it to be wet there and continue to do so throughout the day. in fact, if you are heading out the door, we have some drizzle at the coastline. cloudy skies and windy in spots so watch out for that and the showers continuing to the north. by the afternoon, the rain will be on the increase especially in the north bay but starting to slide further south. this is a really slow-moving

storm. temperatures not too bad mainly into the 60s. you will see all the clouds, a lot of warm frontal moisture sliding through the bay area but the cold front still well to the north so it's going to be slow to move into the bay area and probably slow to get out overnight tonight. so winds kicking up around the bay area. the clouds will be rolling in. and then i think a better chance of rain overnight tonight and in toward tomorrow although we're still seeing scattered showers right now at least in parts of the north bay, some drizzle a little bit further to the south. but here's your cold front as we get into the afternoon. it's slowly making its way to the bay area 6:00 in the day and then overnight tonight it sags through and so if you sleep in tomorrow morning, you'll probably miss most of it but maybe a couple of leftover showers when we start the show tomorrow morning. temperatures in the 60s around the bay area this afternoon. and we'll keep those numbers on the mild side the next couple day. in fact, as we get into thanksgiving, looking very nice, dry conditions and lots of sunshine coming our way, warmer weather on friday and saturday staying very nice and dry into the weekend. that's a look at weather. let's check the roads with

elizabeth. >> first we're following breaking news out of pittsburg. we are just hearing of a water main break at west tenth and kotter a large sinkhole in the area. some residents without water so our news crews are following that and we'll have another live report coming up. in the meantime, out to some bridges. here's a live look right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. no delay right now coming into san francisco at all up the incline. you will find various lanes blocked but again traffic is light. it is still early, not causing much of a delay. other bridges the san mateo bridge right side of the screen westbound 92, 14 minutes out of hayward towards foster city. east bay nimitz 880 in oakland this looks good, as well. no major roadwork this morning through downtown oakland. so southbound 880 is moving fine if you are heading out of town, holiday coming up, thanksgiving just around the corner. so if you are heading towards the oakland airport no delay at the maze. 880/237, good for the silicon

valley drive. we have an accident on the altamont pass. more details on that coming up. back to you guys. >> thank you. it's another black eye on oakland police as a judge weighs whether the department needs a federal takeover. cbs 5 reporter phil matier on the police officers union which says leaders at opd don't lead. reporter: oakland's embattled police department is once again in the spotlight. this time over allegations by the police officers union that from the "riders" case to the "occupy" ride, the rank-and- file are being unfairly targeted for mistakes that the brass make. >> we need to defend the rank -- the men and women who work the streets. >> reporter: the union filing came in the federal case to decide if the department should be taken over by the federal courts. the police union charges that over the years the department has failed to train officers adequately, failed to provide the proper leadership and when things went wrong, most recently in the "occupy" demonstrations, they disciplined 44 officers while the brass got off scot-free. >> there was one probationary

lieutenant that was demoted. aside from that, everyone that suffered discipline was at the rank of sergeant and below. it all fell on the shoulders of rank-and-file. the rank-and-file follow orders. they don't develop strategy or orders. >> reporter: oakland city officials declined to comment on the union's allegations because it's an ongoing court case. but attorney john burris, who has represented victims of police abuse and pushing for the federal court takeover of the department, said the problem runs deeper and that in fact the rank-and-file do shoulder some of the blame. >> the issue is the officers' conduct itself was wrong in each cases. it was improper. if the officers had acted properly in all these cases, we wouldn't have a case. >> and that was phil matier reporting for us in oakland. a burglary spree may be over with three young suspects under arrest on the peninsula. they were all caught at the scene. latest burglary attempt on woodbridge circle in san mateo. the suspects arrested sunday night are 13, 15 and 18 years of age. they are all from san mateo.

police say they had a pillowcase full of stolen items and burglary tools when they were all arrested. it was an alert neighbor by the way who spotted those burglars. >> this is another great tip from an aware neighbor who saw something that they felt was suspicious and called us. >> a rapid response team of officers from several jurisdictions rushed to the scene to help catch the suspects. they have been linked to at least 7 burglaries on the peninsula and they are being check against more than a dozen others. president barack obama has wrapped up his asian tour with talk of trade. he met on the sidelines of the east asia summit in cambodia today with leaders from china and japan but their economic talks were overshadowed by an escalating dispute between china and five neighboring countries over control of the south china sea. it is 4:50 now. the probe into a deadly explosion that heavily damaged an indianapolis neighborhood is now a homicide investigation. police announced last night they have ruled out accidental

causes but still haven't determined what did cause the blast. investigators are hoping now for some tips from the public. >> we urge anyone with information about this matter to contact crimestoppers. specifically, if anyone has information about a white van seen in the subdivision on the day of the explosion. >> at this point investigators are offering no details about why they think someone intentionally caused the explosion. the blast killed two people earlier this month and destroyed five homes and damaged more than 80 others. a new sign of hope that ho ho's, twinkies and wonder bread will remain part of american life. i bankruptcy judge ordered hostess and its second largest union to go into mediation to resolve their differences. it's a last-ditch effort to save the company and more than 18,000 jobs. >> anything is possible but -- then again, they were so far apart the first time.

>> hostess brands include the oakland-based colombo bakery. meanwhile, hostess shelves are now bare in many stores after fans of the snack foods bought up the products fearing they would no longer be available. other companies have expressed interest in buying rights to some hostess products. >> lawrence karnow's freezer full of twinkies. stock futures refer to a dip in the opening. the stock market did well yesterday. apple soaring after struggling since the iphone 5 launched struggled since opening. they closed at $565 a share yesterday up 7%. the gain sent their market value back above $500 billion. americans use their credit cards last quarter and racked up more debt in the process. transunion says the average american is carrying just under $5,000 in credit card debt.

that's up about 5% from the previous summer and at the same time the agency says more americans were late making those credit card payments. and a new survey shows 60% of americans plan to do their holiday shopping over the thanksgiving weekend while many employees may not be happy about working on thanksgiving, 22% of shoppers say they like the option of being able to shop on turkey day. >> you know what? i wait. i don't like to wait in all the lines. >> i hate the crowds. >> i wait a few days. >> all that stuff. it's not only humans that go through a midlife crisis. apparently chimpanzees and orangutans do, too. a study found they have the same u-shaped curve of happiness linked to midlife crisis in humans. well, the chimps and orangutans were happiest when young and old age but their happiness took a dip in the middle of their lives. the study appears in the journal proceedings of the national academy of sciences.

trucks drive by in the last few minutes. no big delays on the bay bridge. we are getting word of a stall on the upper deck. we'll let you know if that changes. otherwise the san mateo bridge very quiet. more "timesaver traffic" coming up. thank you. well, more californians are driving high than drunk. a new statewide survey finds drugged driving affects one in seven weekend nighttime drivers. that's nearly twice the number of those with alcohol in their systems. marijuana was the most prevalent drug. a new push to make testing for the aids virus more common not just for people at high risk. an independent panel that set screening guidelines says americans between the ages of 15 and 64 should get an hiv test at least once. it's part of an evident to make hiv screening a routine part of medical checkups. government data indicates that fewer than half of adults have been tested. kids who regularly attend daycare are more likely to be overweight than those who stay at home with mom and dad.

canadian researchers found kids between the ages of 1 and 4 who stayed with an extended family member or in daycare were more likely to become obese by the age of 10. researchers don't know why but a difference in die the and exercise may be a factor. well, research in dogs could someday help paralyzed humans regain motion. british researchers worked with 34 pet dogs with severe spinal cord injuries. their bag legs were paralyzed but dogs treated with specific cells from their nose -- stem cells from their noses got back the ability to use their legs. researchers think this technique might be useful in restoring movement in humans. >> amazing. >> 4:56. self expression or offensive? san francisco eyeing a public nudity ban. >> plus day 7 and the violence continues in the mideast. the latest effort by the u.s. this morning to defuse the conflict.
